How Detoxing Works

Long term maintenance

Even the medical specialists who disapprove of detoxing agree that it is a valuable process if it helps to teach you healthy habits that you retain after the detox is over. There is no point in completing a detox for a few days and then going back to your old unhealthy eating and living habits.
A detox can be the beginning of a lifestyle change both physically and mentally, so it is recommended that you try to maintain as least some of the important habits you learnt whilst undergoing a detox programme. This will in turn lead to a longer, happier and healthier life.

A Healthy Lifestyle

By retaining the healthy habits you acquired during your detox, you will experience ongoing health benefits. For instance, you will get fewer headaches and your skin will look better if you keep drinking 2 litres (3 ½ pints) of water a day.

Your immune system should function more effectively if you stick with a diet full of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, and you will have a better chance of avoiding heart disease and several types of cancer.

You should try to keep your fibre intake up at around 35g a day for healthy bowel function and to protect you against the increasingly common colon cancer. Keep skin brushing to hold the cellulite at bay and you will improve your circulation all round. Also, by cutting out the junk foods in your diet, you will have a much better chance of keeping your weight within a healthy band.

Mini-detoxes

Detox enthusiasts advise that you repeat it twice a year, but between times you can give yourself a boost by undertaking mini-detoxes where you give up alcohol or caffeine for a week but without necessarily following all the other rules. No doctor in the world could possibly object to that.
